What is Sterling Silver Jewellery?
Sterling silver jewellery is jewellery made from a silver alloy that contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. This alloy is preferred because pure silver, while beautiful, is too soft for most functional uses like jewellery. The addition of copper provides strength and durability while maintaining the silver's appearance.
To determine if sterling silver jewellery is authentic, you can use a number of different methods:
- Hallmark or Stamp: Authentic sterling silver jewellery is often, but not always, stamped with markings such as 925. This indicates the jewellery contains 92.5% silver. Look for these stamps on the inside of rings, clasps of necklaces or bracelets, or on the backs of earrings.
- Quality Markings: Besides 925, you might also see stamps like Sterling, Ster, or SS. These are additional indicators of sterling silver.
- Magnet Test: Sterling silver is not magnetic, so if a magnet attracts the jewellery, it likely contains metals other than silver.
- Appearance and Tarnish: Sterling silver tarnishes over time, developing a dull or darkened patina. This is a natural characteristic of silver. If the jewellery is said to be sterling silver but it never tarnishes, it might not be authentic.
- The Odour Test:Sterling silver is odourless. If you can smell sulphur or a metallic scent, then it is not sterling silver. The item may be silver-plated, but a metallic fragrance indicates that the item is not entirely made of sterling silver.
- Professional Eye: An easy way to verify if your jewellery is authentic sterling silver is to take it to a jeweller. Their trained eye and specialist equipment may be able to spot details or the hallmark stamp that isn’t visible to the naked eye.
By using these methods, you can verify the authenticity of sterling silver jewellery and ensure that you are purchasing or own genuine pieces that will retain their value and beauty over time.
